Meet the Team
Asim - Founder
Asim is the founder and owner of Nova Barbell Club, which he established in 2016 with a vision to create a results-driven, inclusive training environment. A purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Asim brings over a decade of experience coaching a wide range of athletes, including powerlifters, fighters, grapplers, and bodybuilders. His expertise also extends to rehabilitation support, where he has helped numerous clients recover from injuries and rebuild strength safely. Asim is known for his individualized approach to training, blending technical knowledge with a deep commitment to his clients' long-term success and well-being.
Leila - Trainer
Leila has been an integral part of Nova Barbell Club since its founding in 2016, working alongside her husband Asim to help build not just a gym, but a thriving fitness community. A dedicated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athlete and accomplished bodybuilding competitor, Leila brings both grit and grace to the gym floor. Beyond her athletic achievements, she plays a vital role in fostering the supportive, family-like atmosphere that defines Nova Barbell Club. Her presence, energy, and leadership continue to be a driving force behind the strong community culture that sets the gym apart.
Marie - Trainer
Marie is a Certified Personal Trainer who began her fitness journey with Asim and Leila in 2017 at age 55, overcoming chronic pain and lifelong struggles with weight and nutrition. Within her first year, she gained control over her pain and competed in her first deadlift competition—ultimately earning three state records and one national record across four meets in three weight classes. Marie is passionate about movement and adventure, regularly hiking at Manassas Battlefield, exploring new trails, and trying activities like kayaking, ziplining, and rock climbing. She now celebrates the things she once believed were out of reach and is dedicated to helping others overcome their own limitations, believing that growth and change come through challenge and perseverance.
Tyler is one of the original trainers at NVBC, bringing over 11 years of experience coaching and training in martial arts. He began training at age 13 and has since built an impressive record: 7-0 in amateur MMA, 1-1 as a professional MMA fighter, 3-0 in Muay Thai, and 12-3 in BJJ competitions. His passion for fitness deepened through personal training with Asim, inspiring him to become a certified trainer himself. Tyler is known for his high-volume leg days and airdyne cardio, and he believes in keeping fitness enjoyable and consistent. Outside the gym, he enjoys reading, camping, and hiking—always staying active and embracing movement.
Tyler - Trainer
David first joined Nova Barbell Club in the spring of 2023 and quickly became a standout member of the community through his dedication and well-rounded approach to training. Over the past two years, he has competed in three powerlifting competitions and uses his off-season to focus on hybrid training, blending strength work with endurance through running, swimming, and biking. In May of last year, David stepped into the role of trainer at the gym, specializing in strength training with an emphasis on helping clients lose weight, build muscle, and enjoy the process. A blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Haven Grappling, David brings both intensity and fun to every session—his favorite lifts include the squat, deadlift, and power clean.
David - Trainer
Maddy is one of the original members of the Nova Barbell team and a seasoned powerlifting as well as BJJ athlete. Her role combines creative strategy and community building—leading engagement efforts, planning events, producing content, and social media posts. She also provides essential administrative support, including staff coordination and scheduling, while coaching athletes in powerlifting. Maddy’s energy and dedication have played a key role in shaping the gym’s vibrant, inclusive culture.
Maddy - Admin
As an original member of the Nova Barbell team and an experienced powerlifting athlete, Erick plays a pivotal role in the gym’s ongoing development. He leads high-level project management initiatives and supports strategic growth and expansion efforts. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Erick also coaches powerlifting, combining technical expertise with a long-standing commitment to the success and evolution of the Nova Barbell community.
Erick - Admin
Nate joined Nova Barbell Club as a client in June 2024 and quickly found a deep connection with the gym’s mission and community. His enthusiasm and dedication led him to become a key member of the team, where he now serves as an administrator—managing the website, resolving software issues, supporting the gym’s social media presence, and working the front desk. Since joining, Nate has competed in both in-house powerlifting meets, impressively increasing his squat-bench-deadlift (SBD) total from 605 to 1020 lbs. His favorite workouts include bench pressing, squatting, tricep work, and running. Nate is committed to growing with NVBC and playing an active role in supporting its strong, motivated community.
